Gravitational Lensing of stars in the central arcsecond of our Galaxy

چکیده

In the neighborhood of Sgr A*, several stars (S2, S12, S14, S1, S8, S13) enjoy an accurate determination of their orbital parameters. General Relativity predicts that the central black hole acts as a gravitational lens on these stars, generating a secondary image and two infinite series of relativistic images. For each of these six stars, we calculate the light curves for the secondary and the first two relativistic images, in the Schwarzschild black hole hypothesis, throughout their orbital periods. The curves are peaked around the periapse epoch, but two subpeaks may arise in nearly edge-on orbits, when the source is behind or in front of Sgr A*. We show that for most of these stars the secondary image should be observable during its brightness peak. In particular, S14 is the best candidate, since its secondary image reaches K=23.3 with an angular separation of 0.125 mas from the apparent horizon of the central black hole. The detection of such images by future instruments could represent the first observation of gravitational lensing beyond the weak field approximation. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Extended Source Diffraction Effects Near Gravitational Lens Fold Caustics

Calculations are presented detailing the gravitational lens diffraction due to the steep brightness gradient of the limb of a stellar source. The lensing case studied is the fold caustic crossing. The limb diffraction signal greatly exceeds that due to the disk as a whole and should be detectable for white dwarf sources in our Galaxy and its satellites with existing telescopes. Detection of thi...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Compound gravitational lensing as a probe of dark matter substructure within galaxy halos

We show how observations of multiply–imaged quasars at high redshift can be used as a probe of dark matter clumps (subhalos with masses < ∼ 10 M⊙) within the virialized extent of more massive lensing halos. A large abundance of such satellites is predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation in cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogonies. Small–scale structure within galaxy halos affects the fl...

Quasar Image Shifts due to Gravitational Microlensing

Gravitational microlensing of quasars by stars in external galaxies can introduce fluctuations in the centroid of the “point-like” macro–images. The induced shifts are extremely small, on micro–arcsecond scales, below the limits of current optical observations. However, such shifts will become measurable with the proposed “Space Interferometry” mission, due to fly in 2005. The degree of the cen...
